Sherborne Area Roadsafe – Communities take Action for Safer Roads

Sherborne Area Roadsafe Campaign: Choosing first winning designs

A local road safety campaign is raising awareness of road safety near busy schools in Sherborne and the surrounding villages.

Sherborne Area Roadsafe is a campaign led by local parents, supported by Cllr Jill Warburton, Sherborne Area Schools Trust (SAST), Dorset Police, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Dorset County Highways.

Police Inspector Darren Stanton said “This campaign highlights speeding as a major cause of death and injury for young pedestrians, with the risk rising as children reach secondary school age.” Recent statistics from Dorset County Council show that 66 people died on Dorset roads in 2017/18.

Cllr Jill Warburton said “This is a community partnership between local parents, schools, police, the fire and rescue service and DCC Highways We’ve risk assessed road safety near each local school and drawn up a ‘hit list’ of work that needs doing. As the campaign gathers momentum, we’re seeking help from local businesses to keep our children safe by sponsoring a safety sign.”

Sherborne Area Roadsafe campaign aims to:

  • Site Road Safety signs near local schools. Signs will be designed by local students, which each school hosting a competition for the successful design.
  • Highways to repaint road markings and hazard signs near schools where needed
  • Deliver road safety lessons to Year 5 & 6 children as they prepare to move up in to Secondary school
  • Present a Community Safety Event, supported by local business sponsors and safety groups, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service and Dorset Police, showcasing the children’s design work, and raising awareness of road safety.

Each road sign will cost £300 and judges chose the winning designs for the first signs around the 20mph ‘gateways’ on the A30 near Sherborne Primary School and Sherborne Fire Station.

Head Teacher of the Gryphon School Nicki Edwards said “Sherborne Area Roadsafe can make a positive difference to the safety of more than 3,000 children in the Sherborne Area”
