Sherborne Chamber of Trade and Commerce Chairperson Keith Bawden’s New Year message

As we come to the end of difficult year that no one saw coming, I wanted to write a short message of thanks and one of hope for the future.

This year I was elected to Chair of the Chamber, and I have been moved and impressed by the resilience of Sherborne’s businesses in the face of such adverse conditions and times. As businesses you have not only shown courage and depth of character, but you have shown compassion, adaptability and a great sense of community.

Your perseverance has not gone unnoticed and it has been great to see the high street dotted with people during the festive period albeit socially distanced aka the ‘New Normal’.

Sherborne truly is a town for the community and one we can be proud of.

Going into 2021 as a chamber we will continue to be here to support, encourage and develop the town and its businesses. I know unfortunately we have had to cancel many events this year due to Covid 19, but rest assured the chamber will hit the ground running in January with new events and business development opportunities that will benefit businesses and individuals alike. We will be in contact in the coming weeks about these.

With two vaccines now available and being rolled out across the country, normality seems like it may almost be within touching distance. For businesses this lifeline cannot come any sooner. In January I encourage you to maintain discipline and continue to employ your social distancing measures. This along with the vaccines may mean we can see an Easter similar to Easters past. Fingers Crossed!

Also going into 2021, we now have a signed, sealed and delivered Brexit deal. The deal has been approved by parliament and will now mean we as a country and a town can move forward. What this will mean for businesses and how this will affect daily trading we are yet to see, but once again the Chamber will be here to help and guide where we can.

2021 is looking to be a more positive year than its predecessor and as a Chamber, my committee and I will be working hard for you. Here is to 2021 and goodbye to 2020.

Happy New Year and stay safe!

Keith Bawden
